Deep Horizons

with Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art

10 March–17 June 2023
Roberts Institute of Art

Deep Horizons is a new collaborative exhibition, drawing together 60 works from the collections of David and Indrė Roberts and MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art). The exhibition takes place at MIMA in Middlesbrough and explores ideas around excavation, including the mind and dreams, history and time, geology and the land as well as collections, archives and the museum itself.

The exhibition has come together through a series of conversations with a group of invited curatorial collaborators hosted by MIMA and RIA. The curatorial collaborators have been selected because of their specialist knowledge, research and experience in relation to excavation. Their ideas are interwoven into the curation of the exhibition to give unique points of view on two very different collections when thinking about excavation.

Deep Horizons shows especially the dividends that imaginative curating can pay. [...] Added to the mix are the ideas of six other curators — which might sound like a nightmare, but in fact it is a brilliant idea.

Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art

MIMA, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, connects art, people and ideas to empower creative lives and positively contribute to society. An international art gallery and museum, they commission, collect and re-think modern and contemporary art. As the artistic heart of the School of Arts & Creative Industries at Teesside University, MIMA is dedicated to collaborative learning, research and innovation.

Collection Partnerships

Collaboration and partnership are central to our ethos, guiding our activities since our founding in 2007.

In 2017, we closed our gallery space in London to focus on increasing access to the collection through new contexts across the country, enabling diverse audiences to encounter works of art by some of the world’s most acclaimed artists. We have since had collaborations with Flat Time House in London, the Hunterian in Glasgow, Mostyn in Llandudno and Sheffield Museums.
